The Liberal Media isn't so liberal

The “Liberal Media.” It’s a trope so common we rarely see it challenged -- that’s a mistake. In this article, I will make the case that the “Liberal Media,” specifically CNN, is not really liberal at all. Breaking down CNN’s coverage of every issue would make for quite a long article and one that you probably would not end up finishing. So, for the sake of time, we will take a look at CNN’s position regarding one of the world’s most contentious issues -- the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Obviously, the history of this conflict is long and tumultuous, so I will be focusing on recent, significant events therein.

In mid-January 2018, the sitting Republican administration cut foreign aid to Palestinian refugees by half. That money goes to help clothe, feed, educate and generally improve the wellbeing of victims of one of the greatest humanitarian crises in recent history. Unless you are a political junkie, this is probably news to you. Why, you might ask? Well, the fact that CNN dedicated little to no airtime to the issue didn’t help. Instead, they chose to stick to their usual script and promote Russian collusion hysteria -- an excuse concocted within 24 hours of their preferred candidate losing the 2016 election.

Condemning this relief cut would’ve been a liberal slam-dunk. After all, isn’t it the left who care about and want to help refugees? But it does not stop there; what about when CNN golden boy Jake Tapper openly defended Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel? Call me crazy, but rewarding military occupation and apartheid does not strike me as something liberals would do.

Since the announcement of the United States moving its embassy to Jerusalem, understandably, protests have broken out. Through largely peaceful means, Palestinians have actively resisted Israel ripping their nation from their grasp. Unsurprisingly, these peaceful protests have been met with less than peaceful responses. Take the case of Ibrahim Abu Thuraya -- a man who is basically the epitome of courage. Despite losing both his legs and a kidney in an Israeli strike on his refugee camp, he has continued to stand up and fight for what is right.  Though wheelchair-bound, he became famous for climbing up electric poles, getting as high as he could, and then hanging up Palestinian flags. On December 15, 2017, an Israeli sharpshooter shot a crawling Thuraya in the head as he peacefully protested in a buffer zone just outside Gaza. This tragedy was by no means unique. On January 30, 2018, unarmed 16-year-old Laith Abu Naim was shot in the head from a distance of two meters during a protest in his village of Mughayer, becoming the fourth Palestinian minor to be shot dead by Israeli forces in 2018. Where was the condemnation, CNN? Where was the outrage? Were these tragedies given any coverage at all? No -- they simply turned a blind eye.

CNN has said nothing about these atrocities against Palestinians at the hands of the far-right Israeli government, headed by the Likud party. This is a government whose defense minister, Ayelet Shaked, published an open call for genocide, claiming, “the entire Palestinian people is the enemy.” Their representative to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has said, “the biggest problem in the state of Israel is the Arabs.” The most trusted name in news consistently aligns itself with a far-right government in a far-right country. They are by no means liberal.
